Researchers at the University of Birmingham and King’s College London compared people who cycled a large portion of their lives with those who did not as much, as well with some younger adults who did not exercise.

The Study Included 255 Participants In All

This study recruited amateur cyclists that were between 55-79. Eighty-four of these were male, and 41 were female. The men had to be able to cycle 100 km in under 6.5 hours. The women had to be able to cycle 60 km in 5.5 hours. Heavy drinkers, smokers, and those with high blood pressure or other health conditions were excluded.

The participants underwent a series of tests in the lab. They were compared to a group of adults who did not exercise regularly. This group totaled 75 people that were aged 57-80 and 55 healthy young adults aged 20-36.

The Results Were Startling

For those that exercised regularly, the results showed:

  • No loss of muscle mass and strength
  • No increase of body fat with age
  • No increase in cholesterol levels with age
  • Men’s testosterone levels remained high
  • Immune system did not age

Those who cycled regularly for a significant portion of their lives fared the best.
